Kid's Conservation Day
The Willow Creek Sportsman's Club launched its annual Kids Conservation Day in 2022 with just over 30 children and their families in attendance. Since its inception, the event has continued to grow each year, bringing more young people together to discover the importance of conservation, outdoor recreation, and environmental stewardship. Attendance has nearly tripled since the inaugural event.
This free, day-long event is designed to introduce children to the outdoors through fun, hands-on activities while teaching the importance of safety, conservation, and responsible recreation. Community partners play a vital role in the event's success, offering engaging educational stations that provide interactive learning experiences. Participating organizations include the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, the United States Forest Service, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Fin & Fly Adventures, Ament Antler Co., and the Corydon Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Children explore a wide variety of conservation and outdoor topics, including invasive species, habitat management, fly fishing, archery, hunting ethics, firearm safety, wilderness survival, and other outdoor skills. One of the most anticipated attractions each year is the Snake Station, where children have the opportunity to see and safely interact with live, nonvenomous snakes while learning about their important role in Pennsylvania's ecosystems. What often begins with curiosity—or even a little hesitation—quickly turns into excitement as children ask questions, touch or hold the snakes, and discover that these often-misunderstood reptiles are fascinating and beneficial wildlife. The Snake Station has become one of the day's most popular stops and a favorite memory for many participants.
The day begins with a firearm safety presentation before participants are divided into age groups and rotate through educational stations every 20 minutes. A shared lunch gives families, volunteers, and presenters an opportunity to connect before the afternoon activities resume.
At the conclusion of the event, everyone gathers for prize drawings and to share feedback about their experience. With parental consent, participating children are entered into drawings for prizes such as a youth shotgun, youth compound bow, and fly-fishing rod, generously donated by sponsors. More importantly, every child leaves with new knowledge, greater confidence in the outdoors, and a deeper appreciation for conservation and responsible stewardship of our natural resources.
The success of Kids Conservation Day would not be possible without the generosity of our community. Funding and donations from local businesses, community members, Willow Creek Sportsman's Club members, and a Quarterly Impact Grant from the United Way of the Bradford Area enable the Club to offer this event free of charge to participating families. Their continued support ensures that local youth have meaningful opportunities to connect with nature, learn lifelong outdoor skills, and become the next generation of conservationists.
